Import Spreadsheet into Gradebook
In order to import an external spreadsheet into Gradebook, you'll first need a spreadsheet populated with a list of the students' IDs who are in your course. Use the download feature in the Gradebook tool.
Download the Gradebook as a Spreadsheet
Grades imported using the Import Grades option will overwrite any pre-existing grades already entered in the Gradebook.
- Click Gradebook in the left toolbar.
- On the Gradebook Items screen, click Import Grades from the top menu bar.
Import gradebook item from spreadsheet does not work for this purpose.
On the Import Grades screen, click Download Spreadsheet Template to download a pre-formatted spreadsheet. You will be prompted to open or save the file to your desktop on your computer. Saving the file to your desktop will allow you to access it easily. You should change the filename to something that clearly describes your Gradebook.
- Open the file you just saved. The columns contain the following headings: Student ID, Student Name, assignments (e.g., Essay1), and grades (if any have been previously entered into the Gradebook). Add or update your grades using this file.
- You can also add new assignment columns if necessary. You must include a number (inside brackets) beside each assignment title in the column heading to indicate the number of points that assignment is worth.

- Once you've made your changes to the spreadsheet, save the file in .csv format. Most spreadsheet programs, such as Excel, allow you to do this by selecting “Save As” from the “File” menu, and then selecting .csv as the format or file type.
- You can now upload this spreadsheet to your Gradebook.
